The Forthcoming Blackmagic URSA Immersive Camera
Craig Heffernan, Blackmagic's EMEA Technical Sales Director talking to ProAV TV about the URSA Immersive camera currently in development, in partnership with Apple, and due out in 2025:
"This is a background project that's been running for a while, and something we're working on (...) with Apple"
There are only "a few" functioning prototypes of this "funny looking" [Craig's words, not mine!] camera in existence, which...
- Will shoot 8k x 8k for each eye, "likely" via two 12k sensors.
- 180° field of view horizontally and vertically.
- Shooting at up to 90fps in Blackmagic RAW format.
- There will be workflows in Davinci Resolve to allow you to manage dual eye video, currently being developed in collaboration with Apple.
"There's actually going to be probably some restrictions in the workflow, so DaVinci Resolve will analyse frames, and if there's too much motion or any element that will make the user nauseous, or passes over a particular parameter, it will mark the clip to say that it needs to be checked or maybe can't be used... it's very much a work in progress."
"What we will be doing with Apple is, they will dictate the format, the file delivery that needs to go into Vision Pro, so that will just be an exportable option [from Resolve]"
It's also mentioned that the URSA Immersive camera won't have live output.
